Pete & Peggy Bulger Remember Diamond Teeth Mary

It is my pleasure to welcome one of the nation’s top folklorists and folklore administrators Peggy Bulger to the Florida Folk Show Podcast. Peggy’s career began in Florida when she was named Florida’s State Folk Arts Coordinator in 1975, a year later she became the administrator of the Florida Folklife Program for 13 years. Bulger left in 1989 to work 10 years as the Folk Arts Director and Senior Program Officer for the Southern Arts Federation in Atlanta. In 1999, she was named director of Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center – only the second person to hold that post since the Center’s creation in 1976 (Florida folklorist Alan Jabbour was the founding director). Bulger retired from her position as Director of the American Folklife Center (AFC) at the Library of Congress on December 31, 2011. I met Peggy when she first came to Florida and traveled with her to visit a few folklore legends. As she put together the state’s first Folklore directory and have followed her career ever since. In fact, she was the one who first told me about Mary Smith McClain – the legendary Diamond Teeth Mary. Since Mary was in Bradenton and I was in St. Pete, Peggy asked me if I would give Mary a ride to White Springs to perform in the Florida Folk Festival.

A Conversation with David Amram

Welcome to the Florida Folk Show Podcast. This conversation between myself and composer extraordinaire, David Amram, who lives in upstate New York, touches on all aspects of his life and almost a century worth of American music, literature, arts and culture. He shares memories of his time with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk to Langston Hughes and Jack Kerouac; from Ramblin’ Jack Elliott to Willie Nelson. I could have done a whole year of shows with this Renaissance man.
He served as an advisor to the Friends of Jack Kerouac’s House in St. Petersburg and I called him up to give him the bad news about the house, namely the owner had sold it to a flipper. That’s when we cooked up the idea for a zoom interview.
Approaching his 90th birthday in November, you’ll see he is full of life, animated, sharp and has more stories than even Ramblin Jack! Let us know how you like these episodes. Please subscribe to our YouTube channel and leave us a message at Pete@Floridafolkshow.com

Welcome to The Florida Folk Show podcast. In this episode, through the words and recollections of Arcadia realtor and land manager Gordon “Mac” Martin, we celebrate the life and times of a man known far and wide as The Citrus King. Early in his own career, Mac worked very closely with The Citrus King, and shares with us some precious memories of one of Florida’s greatest citizens. In addition to his own career in Florida land, Mac is also one of Florida Folk Music’s best singer-songwriters. He has promised to write a song about Ben Hill Griffin III and when it is ready, we’ll add it to this podcast.
